Holy Stone sells a lot of first drones, and the HS720E is the one most people mean when they say they bought one. It is a 495-gram folding quadcopter with GPS, a 4K camera and no obstacle sensors at all — which makes the first flight more about where you stand than about what you do with your thumbs.
This guide covers that first flight in order: what the parts are, what to do indoors before you leave, the calibration Holy Stone insists on before every single flight, and how the drone comes home. Everything here is quoted from Holy Stone's own pages. Where they do not say something, this guide says so rather than filling the gap — and there is one significant gap, which is that Holy Stone does not publish the control-stick mapping anywhere on their website. More on that when we get to it.

The short version for a beginner: GPS and return-to-home are the features that will save your drone, the 4K camera is stabilised electronically rather than on a mechanical gimbal, and there is no obstacle avoidance — that one is a confirmed no, not a gap in our data. At 495 g it is also over the weight threshold that lets the smallest drones skip registration, which we come back to at the end.

The parts you need to know
Seven things, and you only really need to find three of them before your first flight: the card slot, the battery bay, and the indicator lights.
Part 1: Four brushless motors
Holy Stone specifies “Brushless Motor”. Brushless means quieter, longer-lived and more responsive than the geared motors on cheaper toys — the practical difference a beginner notices is that it holds position instead of wandering.
Part 2: Folding arms
The arms fold against the body; Holy Stone rates them for “thousands of times folding and unfolding”. Folded it is 177 × 104 × 58 mm, unfolded 337 × 240 × 58 mm.
Part 3: Forward camera, on a tilt mount
A 130° field of view, adjustable through “-90°~0°” — level with the horizon down to straight below. Stabilised electronically (EIS), not on a mechanical gimbal, so it is smoothing the image rather than physically holding the lens steady.
Part 4: Downward camera (optical flow)
“A camera on the bottom of the drone” that reads the ground to hold position when GPS is weak or unavailable. Low altitudes only — see the contradiction below on how low.
Part 5: Memory card slot
“Point the camera of the drone forward, and flip the drone over, and the slot is near the base of the right (forward) arm.” Without a card the 4K stays on the aircraft and never reaches you.
Part 6: Front and rear indicator lights
Not decoration — the calibration procedure is read entirely off these. Yellow flashing means calibrating; green flashing means a stage passed.
Part 7: Battery bay
A 7.4 V 2800 mAh, 20.72 Wh lipo. Two come in the box, which is where the “46 minutes” claim comes from — it is two flights, not one. Position here is indicative; Holy Stone publishes no dimensioned drawing.
Before you go outside
Most first-flight problems are decided indoors, before the propellers ever turn. None of this is optional and all of it is quick.

Install the app Holy Stone actually names
There are several look-alike drone apps on both stores. The HS720E uses one specific app, and Holy Stone names it outright.

Check your phone can talk to it at all
The HS720E's camera link needs 5 GHz Wi-Fi. A phone without it will connect to the controller and still show you no picture, which reads like a broken drone.

Charge both batteries, and start early
Two batteries ship in the box. The charge time is long enough that it decides which day you fly, not which hour.

Put a card in, the right way round
Without a card the 4K footage has nowhere to go — what reaches your phone is a smaller copy. Holy Stone describes the slot's position by feel rather than by picture.

Settle whether you need to register
At 495 g this is over the 250 g threshold that exempts the smallest drones in most countries. Holy Stone points you at your own aviation authority, which is the correct answer.

What we could not verify
- How to bind or pair the controller to the aircraft. Holy Stone's website does not describe the pairing sequence for the HS720E; it lives in the printed manual only.
Calibrating the compass, every single time
If you skip one section of this guide, do not let it be this one. Holy Stone's own troubleshooting for a drone that drifts or circles on its own starts with calibration, and their instruction is not "when it feels off" — it is every time you power the drone on.
This is the step beginners skip and then blame the drone for. Holy Stone's guidance is unambiguous: do it every single time you power on, and do it away from metal.

Enter calibration with both sticks
A compass icon appears on the controller's screen and the aircraft's lights start flashing yellow. That flashing is how you know you are in calibration and not in flight.

Spin it flat, three times
Hold the aircraft level and turn it through three full rotations. Green flashing means this half is done.

Stand it on its tail, three more times
Now vertical, camera pointing at the sky, three more rotations. The light pattern at the end also tells you something about your GPS reception.

Not once when the drone is new — every power-on. This is Holy Stone's own recommendation, not ours.

What we could not verify
- Holy Stone's step 3 says the finished state is “front solid red, rear solid green” and then says the same pattern indicates weak GPS. Their page does not explain how to tell a successful calibration from a poor GPS lock, and we are not going to guess which reading is right.
Your first flight
Wide open space, nothing overhead, nothing metal nearby. The HS720E cannot see obstacles, so the only obstacle avoidance on this aircraft is your choice of field.

No sensors, no braking, no warning. Holy Stone says so plainly and prescribes the fix.

The interference list is Holy Stone's, and it is the reason a drone that flew fine last week suddenly drifts in a car park.

Holy Stone's own troubleshooting for a drone that circles on its own is mostly about altitude and interference, not about the sticks.

Know how far is too far
Two different numbers matter here: how far the controller reaches, and how far the video reaches. The picture gives up long before the aircraft does — and in most countries you must keep it in sight regardless, which is closer than either figure.

What we could not verify
- Which stick does what. Holy Stone's website never states the HS720E's control mapping — not on the spec sheet, not in the FAQ. We will not reproduce a stick layout from memory for an aircraft whose manual we could not read, so the mapping is left to the printed manual in the box.
- How the motors are started, and whether one-key takeoff needs the motors running first. Not stated on any Holy Stone web page for this model.

Getting it back
The HS720E has a return-to-home function and two triggers that fire it without you. Knowing what makes it act on its own is most of the value.

It comes back by itself in two cases
Low battery, or a lost controller link. Both are automatic, so an aircraft flying itself back is usually working as designed rather than running away.

Indoors, it holds position differently
With no usable GPS the drone switches to a downward camera to hold still. It is a low-altitude, indoor system and it is not a substitute for GPS outdoors.

Follow Me needs the app, GPS, and a short leash
It tracks your phone, not your body, and only inside a stated distance band. Out of that band it is not doing anything clever.
Holy Stone’s wording
“When the HS720E is in low power mode or loses the signal to the remote controller it will return to the Home Point.”
“The Optical Flow Mode is typically used in an indoor environments when the GPS signal is too weak or unavailable. It works best when the drone’s altitude is lower than 3 meters. The drone will collect image data with the help of a camera on the bottom of the drone to achieve high-precision positioning and smoother control.”
“Ensure the drone’s flight range is within 15~95 ft./5-30M. Tap the “multi-function” icon first on the App, then tap the “follow me” icon, and follow the pop-up to enter the Follow-Me function — the drone will now follow the cellphone’s coordinates.”
What we could not verify
- The altitude the drone climbs to on its way home, and what happens if something is in that path. Holy Stone does not publish a return-to-home altitude for the HS720E, and with no obstacle sensors this is worth knowing.
Where Holy Stone contradicts itself
This is not nitpicking. Both of these are numbers a new pilot would reasonably plan around, and Holy Stone publishes two different answers for each on their own pages.

Our spec database carries 23 minutes, because that is the figure in the spec table and it is the one consistent with Holy Stone’s own “46 Mins/2 Batteries” claim. The 26-minute wording is kept verbatim in our notes. Either way, plan for less: 23 minutes is a still-air, no-wind, no-hovering-about number.
How high optical flow works — Holy Stone says both
“Optical Flow Positioning provides precise positioning without GPS signals. It works at heights below 5 meters to help capture clear images.”

Two ceilings, five paragraphs apart. Treat 3 metres as the working figure, since it is the more conservative of the two, and do not rely on either indoors near a window.
What we could not find out
What Holy Stone does not publish
- The stick mapping — which stick controls altitude and rotation, and which controls direction. Holy Stone publishes this only in the printed manual.
- Maximum speed, in any unit.
- Wind resistance. No Beaufort level and no m/s figure appears on any Holy Stone page for the HS720E, so our wind column is empty rather than estimated.
- The camera's megapixel count. Holy Stone states “4K Sony CMOS sensor” and a 130° field of view, but never a sensor size or a stills resolution in megapixels.
- Maximum altitude, and the return-to-home altitude.
These are blank in our spec table rather than filled with a plausible number. If you have the printed manual, it answers the first one.
The stick mapping is the one that matters, and it is worth being blunt about why it is missing. We could tell you that almost every consumer drone ships in "Mode 2", with throttle and rotation on the left stick and direction on the right — but we could not source that for this aircraft from Holy Stone, and a guide that guesses at which stick makes a drone climb is worse than a guide that admits it does not know. The printed Instructions For Use in the box has it. Read that page before you fly, and treat the rest of this guide as everything else you need.
Do you have to register it?
Probably, and the reason is the number in the spec table: 495 grams. The 250-gram line is the one that matters in most countries, and this drone is not close to it — it is nearly twice that. We wrote about why that threshold exists and what falls either side of it in sub-250g drones and the rules.
Holy Stone's own answer points you at your own aviation authority, which is correct — the rule is set by where you fly, not by who made the drone. In the United States that means the FAA's drone registration process. Check your own regulator before the first flight, not after.
Where this drone sits
If you are still deciding, the flight-time figure is the one most likely to mislead you — 23 minutes is a still-air number and yours will be shorter. We took that apart in what flight time really means.

Ophelia GO. Search that name exactly — several unrelated apps rank for “Holy Stone”, and the wrong one will connect to nothing.

Holy Stone says 23 minutes in the spec table and 26 minutes in the FAQ on the same page. We publish 23 and record the other wording. Real flights with wind and manoeuvring come in shorter than either.

Why does my drone circle on its own without touching the sticks?
Holy Stone attributes this mainly to magnetic interference and points to calibration and site choice. Their full checklist is in the pre-flight section above.

Probably, and that is a consequence of its weight: 495 g puts it well over the 250 g line that exempts the smallest drones. Check your own aviation authority — in the US that is the FAA.

How far can it fly?
The controller reaches 999 m and the video feed 500 m. Both are ideal-condition figures, and rules requiring you to keep the aircraft in sight will stop you long before either.

What size memory card does it take?
Holy Stone specifies support for a 128 GB card, class 10 or faster. Their FAQ asks for “FA32 format”, which is a typo for FAT32 — we are quoting it as written rather than correcting a manufacturer’s spec on their behalf.

Which stick is the throttle?
We cannot tell you from a source, so we are not going to tell you at all. Holy Stone does not publish the HS720E stick mapping on its website — it is in the printed Instructions For Use in the box, and that is the one document to actually read before flying.
Can it fly indoors?
It has an optical-flow mode intended for exactly that, using a downward camera when GPS is unusable. Keep it low — and remember there is still nothing watching for walls.
