The 250 gram line, and why beginners keep hearing about it

Why so many drones weigh just under 250 g, what that actually gets you, and what it does not.
If you have spent an evening reading drone listings, you have seen the number 249 everywhere. It looks like a coincidence. It is not.
Most countries set their lightest tier of drone regulation at 250 grams. Below it, the paperwork is usually shorter — often no registration at all for recreational flying. Above it, you are into a different category. So manufacturers design to land just underneath, and a whole class of drone exists because of a number in a rulebook.
What being under 250 g actually gets you
Less than people assume. It commonly means no registration for recreational flying in many places, and that is genuinely convenient.
It does not mean you can fly anywhere. Airspace restrictions, altitude limits, keeping the aircraft in sight, and rules about flying over people apply to light drones too in most jurisdictions. A sub-250 g drone is a lighter administrative burden, not a permission slip.
It also does not make the drone safer to fly badly. It makes it safer if it falls on someone, which is the reason the threshold exists.
Check your own national aviation authority before your first flight. Rules differ by country and they change.
What you give up
Weight buys stability. Lighter aircraft are more affected by wind, so a sub-250 g drone in a stiff breeze will fight you in a way a heavier one will not. Manufacturers publish a wind resistance figure — where they publish one at all — and it is worth reading before you buy.
The other trade is usually the camera. A bigger sensor is a heavier sensor.

How to decide
If it is your first drone, obstacle avoidance matters more than any camera specification. It is the feature most likely to prevent the expensive kind of mistake, and it is the one beginners most often skip to save money.
Work out your budget, then spend it in this order: sensing, then flight time, then camera. You can improve your footage with practice. You cannot practise your way out of flying into a tree you did not see.
